The Strokes have released the music video for their latest single, “Going Shopping,” recruiting actor Walton Goggins for a playful performance that pays tribute to one of pop music’s most recognizable visuals.
Directed by longtime collaborator Johann Rashid, the clip pairs Goggins with frontman Julian Casablancas in a surreal, dance-filled sequence featuring clowns and visual callbacks that evoke Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al,” which famously starred Chevy Chase.
The band specifically wanted Goggins for the project after deciding to create their own modern homage to Simon’s classic video. Despite filming a feature movie in Spain’s Canary Islands, the actor agreed to participate, prompting Casablancas and members of the band to travel to Tenerife in late May to shoot the video. The finished production blends whimsical choreography with offbeat imagery while maintaining the loose, tongue-in-cheek style that has become a hallmark of The Strokes’ visual output.
Goggins celebrated the collaboration on Instagram, expressing his longtime admiration for the band and calling the experience unforgettable. He wrote, “THE STROKES!!! Video for the first release off their new Album. GOING SHOPPING!!” and added, “Days I will never forget! New Friends. Can’t wait to see you on the road gents!”
“Going Shopping” is one of the preview tracks from Reality Awaits, the band’s seventh studio album and the follow-up to The New Abnormal. Produced by Rick Rubin, the record includes previously released songs “Falling out of Love” and “Going Shopping.”
Following recent festival appearances, including Coachella, The Strokes are preparing for an extensive international tour in support of Reality Awaits. The itinerary includes a hometown performance at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in New York, multiple nights at Red Rocks, London’s O2 Arena, Paris’ Accor Arena and additional dates across Europe and North America.
