Beastie Boys co-founder Mike D has released “Crypto,” the latest single from his forthcoming debut solo album, Thank You, offering another glimpse into the eclectic sound of the project ahead of its Aug. 28 release via Capitol Records.
Accompanied by an official visualizer, the track follows previously issued songs “Switch Up,” “What We Got” and “True Colors,” continuing the rollout of the 13-track collection. “Crypto” takes a satirical look at greed and financial excess, with Mike D delivering the repeated lyric, “Where to go with that greed,” over a layered, hypnotic groove. The album was recorded primarily in the artist’s home studio and features contributions from collaborators including Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Jin, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha and Tylan Donaldson. It was mixed by Derek “MixedByAli” Ali and mastered by Nicolas de Porcel.
Thank You marks Mike D’s first full-length solo release following decades with the Beastie Boys. In announcing the album earlier this year, he described its creative balance by saying, “The way I describe the record is that musically it’s still pretty immature, and lyrically it’s a little bit more mature,” reflecting a project shaped by experimentation and personal growth. His sons, Skyler and Davis Diamond, also played an important role in the album’s development, serving as trusted creative sounding boards during the recording process.
Following the album’s release, Mike D will reunite with his backing band, 5D, for a series of U.S. performances beginning Aug. 30 in Boston before stops in Washington, D.C., Asheville, Atlanta, New York and an appearance at San Francisco’s Portola Music Festival.
